How to Turn 25 Days of Annual Leave into 50+ Days Off in 2027
Most people book time off reactively — a week here, a few days there. But annual leave is a currency, and like any currency, its value depends on where you spend it. Placed well around bank holidays, 25 days of leave can genuinely become 50+ days away from work.
The maths that makes it work
Every bank holiday that touches a weekend creates a "bridge" — a short run of workdays that, if you book them off, connects weekends and holidays into one long break. The best bridges turn 3 booked days into 10 consecutive days off.
The star of 2027 for England & Wales: Christmas. With Christmas Day and Boxing Day substitute holidays falling on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December, booking just Wednesday 29 to Friday 31 December gives you ten straight days off — from Christmas Day right through to Sunday 2 January — for three days of leave.
The 2027 bridges worth knowing (England & Wales)
- Easter (Good Friday 26 Mar, Easter Monday 29 Mar): book 4 days, get 10 off
- Early May (Mon 3 May): book 4, get 9
- Spring bank holiday (Mon 31 May): book 4, get 9 — and it lines up with May half term for families
- Summer bank holiday (Mon 30 Aug): book 4–5, get 9–10
- Christmas: book 3, get 10
Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland each have extra bridges of their own — St Andrew's Day, St Patrick's Day, and Ireland's June, August and October bank holidays all create opportunities the UK-wide guides miss.
One more thing most guides forget: your leave year
Not everyone's allowance resets in January. Public sector often resets in April; big consultancies commonly reset in September. If that's you, the game has two halves: use what's left before your reset on the nearest bridge, then plan the fresh year properly from day one.
