What Does "Travel Smarter" Actually Mean?
You've probably heard the phrase "travel smarter" before. It sounds good — but what does it actually mean? For most people it means finding cheaper flights, comparing websites, or waiting for deals. In reality, travelling smarter isn't about doing more searching — it's about understanding how travel booking actually works.
What most people think it means
When people hear "travel smarter", they usually think: finding the cheapest flight, comparing multiple booking websites, waiting for discounts or last-minute deals. That's what most of us were taught — and while it can sometimes help, it's based on a limited view of how travel is really bought and sold.
What's actually happening
What most people don't realise is that travel pricing already includes commission — whether you use it or not. When you book through public websites, you're only seeing the options those platforms choose to show you. You might be paying the same price as everyone else, but without understanding how that price is structured, or what other options exist behind the scenes.
It's not that you're doing anything wrong — it's just the only way most people have been shown to book.
So what does it actually mean?
Travelling smarter means understanding how bookings work — and using that knowledge to make better decisions. In simple terms:
- Knowing how pricing is structured (and where the commission goes)
- Being aware of options beyond public websites
- Having more flexibility in how trips are put together
- Feeling confident when you book, instead of hoping for the best
How I look at it
Once I understood how travel booking works behind the scenes, I approached it differently. Instead of relying only on public websites, I look at a wider range of options and structure trips more flexibly. Some people just want help booking; others are curious and prefer to understand it themselves. Both are fine — and this blog exists for both.
Who this helps most
In my experience, this way of thinking makes the biggest difference for families booking holidays, people who travel once or twice a year, anyone spending a few hundred to a few thousand pounds on travel, and people who like understanding how things work instead of guessing.
Got a trip coming up?
I'm happy to show you how I'd approach it — no pressure, no obligation.
